Club Champion: Mike Haslett
B Grade Champion: Chris Nailer
C Grade Champion: Alan Horsfall
D Grade Champion: John Mason
In the A Grade we saw a match go the full 36 holes with Mike Haslett eventually prevailing over our 2012 Club Champion Jase Hyland, 2 up. Although getting off to a scratchy start with some poor putting Jase’s superior ball striking gave him a steady lead of up to 3 through most of the first 18 holes. A win to Mike on the 18th meant a 2 up lead for Jase at the halfway mark however a chip in birdie on the 19th got the lead back to 3.
Mike countered with birdies on the 2nd and 4th and with Jase making a few bogies scores were tied early on the back nine. With a further run of halves the match was all square on the 35th hole where Mike two putted for par from just off the right hand edge whilst Jase, after hitting a tee shot long couldn’t salvage par despite hitting a fantastic chip shot from over the back of the green.
Jase needed to win the 36th to push the match into extra holes and was given a glimmer of hope after Mike pushed his tee shot well right. Unfortunately Jase’s tee shot and chip both came up short. The resulting long par putt missed the hole and with Mike playing a nice chip shot to 4 feet and only needing to two putt to win Jase conceded the match.
In the B Grade Chris Nailer took on Andrew Thomas and it was Chris that took the early lead, steadily building a big advantage thanks to handling the pace of the greens much better. With a large lead at the halfway mark the pause for lunch helped Andrew as the fast playing Chris faltered a little. Andrew began to hold his own however the large lead built up in the first 18 holes proved to great with Chris running out the winner 7 & 5.
In the C Grade Alan Horsfall took on Barry Sparrow, with Barry aiming for his 3rd straight Club Championships having claimed the C Grade title in 2012 and 2011. However it was Alan who slowly built a lead over the first 18 holes. Alan moved to 3 up as the holes remaining started to reduce, before holding on to win 3 and 2.
D Grade
In the D Grade last year’s champion John Mason took on Peter Downs with Peter building the advantage early to hold a 2 up lead at the completion of the first 18. However it was John who took advantage early in the last 9 clawing back Peter’s lead and winning 1 up to secure back to back D Grade Club Championships.
Well done to all players involved. All matches were played in fantastic spirit with some very good golf played by all. Thanks also to those members who took time out of their usual Saturday games to referee the various matches.
