At 8 am on Wednesday 30 April, the second qualifier, Janeen Coleman and the eighth qualifier, Sharon Pascoe began their match. Janeen won the first two holes but then Sharon controlled her nerves to play steadily and win the third. Janeen continued to hit very strongly and having scored a par on the 9th was 6 up at the turn. She continued to dominate, chipping in for a par on the 12th and was 8 up after fourteen. Then disaster, as a seemingly perfect length second shot on the 15th caught the slope and rolled into the water; next, her ball went into the creek on the 16th. After 18 holes, her lead was back to six.
Encouraged by spectators who had completed their own 9 hole competition, the pair played the 19th hole strongly and we saw some amazing golf from both players as they realized that for either player to win, they had to play accurately and yet take risks to achieve the lower score. Sharon won three holes in a row and Janeen just couldn’t close the contest until they squared the 24th hole. Janeen became the Champion for 2014 - 4 /3. The Silver Salver final teed off at 8.30, the contest was between Minnie Semmelmann, the first qualifier and Ann Morton, the second qualifier. They played evenly with much concentration until Minnie came to grief in the water on the back nine and Ann (+3) became the winner on the 16th hole. Congratulations to all of the finalists. Wendy Jackson Women's Captain Saturday the 3rd of May saw the semi finals and final of our Foursomes Championships where the top 4 gross scores face off in an 18 hole match-play format.
In the morning semi finals the number one qualifiers Brad Spaven and David Spaven took on last years Foursomes Champions Bill Guy and Mike Haslett where they maintained their excellent form to win comfortably 7 & 5. The other semi final saw a close match between Billy Cawthorne & Jamie Burt against Andrew Keogh and Anthony Evans where a close match was won 3 & 2 by Billy and Jamie. After a quick lunch the winners were back on the course in the afternoon to play the final where the father son duo of Brad and David Spaven couldn't find any early rhythm posting multiple bogies through the open holes. Bill and Jamie played solid golf reeling off multiple pars and gaining an early lead which was stretched to +5 at the turn. Around the back nine the Spaven team managed to find a little bit more of that previous form, winning two of the first 4 holes to get the deficit back to +3. However on the 14th Billy and Jamie made a great par to halve the hole after finding trouble on both their first and second shots and with Brad's drive on the 15th finding trouble down the left Billy and Jamie won the hole to claim the victory 4 & 3. Congratulations to all finalists who played some excellent golf in the morning and afternoon, despite the cold and at times wet conditions. Also the ground staff are commended for once again having the course in great conditions with the greens in particularly good conditions. |
