2021 Men's Pennant Wrap Up
Howdy everyone,
Well 2021 pennant season is over, done and dusted, and we have won!... and we have lost as well, :(
Congratulations to our C1 team and our C2 team who are both pennant champions in 2021!
Commiserations to the A1 team who went down in the final, and to our B1 team also who missed the final by a whisker...
The C1 team headed down to MaCracken and took on the the hugely endowed Oakbank team. Oakbank were the only team to beat our boys during the season. It's fair to say that our lads were intimidated on that day, intimidated by the size of their opponents.... handicaps!. They had to give away 50 shots and none of them could fathom the idea of running into a team who could possibly 50 shots worse golfers than themselves... It's no wonder the boys lost that day... but going into the final they were awake to the scenario, and after a few little pep talks here and there they went in with the understanding, that the reason they have to give up 50 shots is because their opponents are really crap!, and that they themselves are like pro's in comparison.... They went down to MaCracken some young lads with a bit of belief, and walked out grown (old) men carrying the shield, and leaving the Oak-bankers in their dust, to lick their wounds and rue the day that they tried to out handicap the mighty Chungans!
Best player on the day was the Captain Martin 'Hendo' Henderson. Or so he told me several times at the club afterwards. Many of his team mates said he didn't play very well at all, but I don't believe them so he can have an extra bottle of wine for player of the day. Hendo had a good season winning 3 out of 4 including his finals win.
The best season for any pennant player this year belongs to Darren 'Bloody' Wilson, who became the only player to win the maximum 6 games, when he won on mother's day at MaCracken. Well done Dazza!
Hendo and Dazza are both proud members of the XXXL club along side team mates, Peter 'Angry' Anderson, and Alan 'Hay' Bailey.. Peter had had a lean season by his lofty standards, winning only 2 and losing 3, before claiming a 19th hole win in the final. Hay Bails on the other hand had a great minor season winning 4 games, but lost in the final giving him a 4/2 season tally.
A young lad called Zack, made he pennant debut in round 3, and proceeded to produce a perfect season winning 4 from 4 including a convincing 4/3 win in the final. Zack is one of 4 undefeated players this season.... Steve 'VP' Nailer narrowly lost his game in the final going 1 down, but Steve did contribute 2 from 2 in the minor rounds, gaining a spot with the demise of out of form Neville Jordan who dropped himself after 4 losses..
Reigning player of the year Warren 'Wazza' Ryan, had a typically good year winning his first 3, then losing a couple under difficult circumstances, but then fining his winning form again in the final to make sure his team won again for the 3rd season running!
Three other players played 1 game each in this team throughout the season. They being Derek Jones, Rob Eibisch, and Andrew Fort. Much appreciation for these guys I call the swing men, (not because they have great golf swings), because they make themselves available to play in any team at any time, and have made, (no longer referring to Rob), valuable contributions in multiple teams this year...
Big thanks again to Hendo for captaining and making my job easy, and an even bigger thanks for picking up the pizzas on Sunday, (sorry bout that).
In the C2 grade we Echungans were also very victorious, and when I say 'we' I mean John McDonald and his merry men!. But to be totally honest, these guys were a hopeless bunch of misfits at the start of the season. They were belted to the tune of 6/1 in their opening round match against Nairne, who they would ultimately face again in the final stanza, which was played on Mother's day at the Aston hills golf course. But the difference between round 1 and the final was that over that 8 week period, Captain Private Major John McDonald, whipped his men into shape with a lots of hard yards and a bit of of tough love. He went and and turned that bunch of losers into super fit, super switched on, elite golfing unit!
After the round 1 debacle the team all had a week off to reflect, and take a good hard look at themselves. John organized a boot camp at Victor Harbour in that off week, and some say that the 'collective minds' crew were also called in to further enhance the players psychological and metaphysical key performance indicators..... The lads then had the Easter weekend off, but came out primed, and chafing at the bit to get back on the track and redeem themselves, and that's just exactly what they did! They had a convincing (5/2) win in round 3. They followed up in week 4 with another win solid (4/3) win, leaving themselves only needing to halve the last round to get into the final. Wisely the C2 crew didn't waste too many good shots in doing so, stretching themselves only far enough to secure the half and make it into the final.
It was D. Dougie Wilson who chalked up the half that day, after rejoining the team ahead of round 5. Dougie was recalled to the team after the shock loss of Dave Norman (out Suspended). Doug played in round 1 but was so traumatized by the days events that he swore he'd never play again, but to Doug's credit, he dragged himself out of obscurity and returned triumphantly to the arena, first dragging the team into the final and then having a good win on Mother's day to become a premiership player a new cult hero in the Echunga pennant history books!
Round 1 saw 2 young fella's in Bill Lewis and Dan 'the Licker man' Murphy making their debut appearances in the couldren that is C2 pennants!. Bill Lewis was the only player to win that day, and because he was so ashamed to be associated with the team, he took the next week off,.... which turned out to be a bye anyway. He then had a half, followed by another win, and a defeat to Echunga ex patriot Geoff Quirk, who is now based at Victor.... Bill lost on the last hole on Mother's day, but can be happy to have had a good debut season and a premiership too.... Dan the Licker man battled hard all season narrowly missing out in rounds 3 and 4, before finally nailing a crucial win in round 5 to be the difference between playing finals and premiership glory.... or being also-rans who didn't make the final. Dan had a narrow loss in the final but it didn't matter because the team won anyway and Dan got them there in the first place!
Round 2 was a bye as previously mentioned, but round 3 brought on another 2 debutantes, making it 4 freshman's (for those that can't count) in the one team! Craig McLatchie and Les Cooper joined the team after being unavailable in round 1. Craig had a couple of wins and a couple of losses including his narrow loss in the final. Les had a half, then a win and a loss, before securing a crucial 18 hole win in the final to bring home the title.
That brings us to the most experienced player in the team, that being Jaden McGlashan, a veteran of 15 pennant matches prior to the start of this season. Despite being beaten in round 1, Jaden became the most dependable player in the team, and playing at #1 every week he strung together 4 solid wins in a row, proving to be the corner stone of this premiership winning team. His 4/3 win in the final also earns him player of the day, so Jaden can pick up an extra bottle of wine from the club at his convenience.
Captain McDonald did a superb job as leader of this group. He organised practice games which were well attended. He organised the new team shirts which came into play for round 3, and he built a great team camaraderie among his players and hi organization made life easy for me. He also contributed a couple of wins along the way and delivered a fine speech at the end of season celebrations back at the club on Sunday afternoon....
Other players who contributed to this team are Janis Jansen who filled in for round 1, and Dave Norman who had to withdraw after round 4 due to exceptional circumstances.
Well done to this team of youngsters who have proven themselves to be the equal of our much lauded and much heavier, (200 + kg's in total) C1 team.
The story of the A1 demise can be read in this week's Courier, so I'll just use that again shall I?...
SGG Finals results
Lady Bay Claim the ‘Von’
The finals of the Southern Golf Group men’s pennant series was played on Mother’s day at various courses throughout the Hills and Fleurieu peninsula. In the A1 division Lady Bay and Echunga met down at the much loved Victor Harbour golf club.
Lady Bay had gone through the 5 round minor series on undefeated and a clear favorite to win against the Echunga team who won all but the game against Lady Bay in round 4. Lady Bay boasts 2 Simpson cup players in their line up in Jak Carter and Andrew Nakone. With the premier metro competition commencing and clashing with the SGG finals, there was speculation over the availability of said players. To their credit both Jak and Andrew played for Lady Bay despite pressure from their Metro club commitments.
Echunga did well in ordering their players in an effort to choose the match ups that would give them the best chance of defeating their highly rated opponents.
In the #7 match Echunga’s Viv Smith played the Lady Bay captain, Jason Schlink. Schlink like the rest of his team had had a very good season winning the majority of his matches whilst Smith had a 2 wins, a half, and 2 losses including a defeat at the hands of Schlink in round 4. Schlink got the job done again for his team on Mother’s day and won 3 and 2, (3 holes up with 2 to play).
Playing at #6 Nigel Turner from Lady Bay played against long-time friend and rival in Mike Haslett. These two wise old heads would have 100 years of golf between them, and both are very hard to beat. Turner was going into the game undefeated for the season, whilst Haslett was coming off of a disappointing loss in round 5. The match was a battle royal. It was close all day, with Haslett just edging out the Turner on the last hole to win 1 up and keep the Echungans in the hunt.
Playing at #5 it was Echunga’s Nathan Separovich taking on Lady Bay’s Craig Baker. Nathan, coming off of a good win in Round 5, continued his winning form in another close match. The Echunga man coming out on top after 18 holes winning 1 up, and taking the advantage for his team leading 2/1 with three matches completed.
In the #4 match Elliott Willgoose (Echunga) and Adam Aldrit locked horns in a battle of the big hitters. Big hitting isn’t everything though, and someone was bound to come unstuck around the tight Victor Harbour layout. On this occasion it was Willgoose who found more of the shrubbery and had a game he’d rather forget losing after 16 holes 3 down with 2 to play (3/2).
With the team score at 2 all, the #3 match-up of Jamie Burt (Echunga) and Steve ‘Spud’ Alderson from the ‘bay of Ladies’ was going to be crucial in the overall scheme of things. There was plenty at stake and the standard was high on the front 9 with Alderson holding a slight lead. After halving the 10th hole with birdies, and with the pressure building, the match went downhill fast with both players simultaneously imploding through a series of poor shots, unlucky shots, stupid shots, and nervous misses. With only 1 par between them in the last 6 holes it was the previously unbeaten Jamie Burt who crashed the hardest, conceding 2 more holes in unlikely circumstances before losing to Alderson 3/2.
Lady Bay #1 Jak Carter was always going to be near impossible to beat for any of the Echunga players such is the quality of his performance throughout the season. One brave soul in Naren Taverna put his hand up and took on the challenge, going in with some confidence after claiming the prized scalp of David Pateyjohns from Willunga in the previous week. Naren put up a good fight and was playing pretty near to par golf but Jak was still just that few shots better and eventually won on the 16th hole 3/2.
With 4 matches and the Von Doussa shield in their keeping the remaining match was called a half between Andrew Nakone (Lady Bay) and Echunga captain Bill Guy. Their match was all square heading down the 18th, and would have made for a thrilling grand stand Finish had the Echungans been able to produce another winner in their ranks.
Congratulations to Lady Bay! SGG A1 pennant winners for the first time in their club’s history.
With Mount compass now relegated from the A1 division, all eyes turned to the A2 final between South Lakes and McCracken golf clubs, to see who would win that title and join the A1 division next year. This match was played at the beautiful Links Lady Bay course. The weather was fine as it has been all season and these two strong teams went at it and it went down to the wire with each club holding 3 wins apiece, it was a final hole grand stand finish with South lake’s Nick Talbot needing to hole a 12 foot putt on the last hole to push the game into extra hole but the putt lipped out and McCracken took the win 4/3 and will join the top clubs in the big dance next year.
The same 2 clubs, McCracken and South lakes, played off in the B1 final as well, and unfortunately for South Lakes the result was also the same with McCracken winning 4/3. This game was also played at Links Lady Bay in what was a great day for McCracken and quite the opposite for South Lakes.
In the other divisions the results were:
B2 Nairne def Oakbank 4.5/2.5, played at Willunga GC.
B3 Strathalbyn def Victor Harbour 5/2, played at South Lakes GC.
C1 Echunga def Oakbank 5/2, played at McCracken GC.
C2 Echunga def Nairne 4/3, played at Aston hills GC
Congratulations to all the winning clubs and players, and to all who participated in the 2021 SGG men’s pennant season.
--------------------------
Thanks to all the A1 players including Hara Taverna who played 2 games in the A1's halving his match at Murray Bridge, and also providing a crucial win at Willunga, without which we would have lost to the bottom side and missed the finals. Thanks also to Derek Jones who filled in that day at Willunga also and put up a brave showing, after being called upon in the early hours and asked to play at very short notice after poor Elliot Willgoose was struck down by, 'FOOD' poisoning, and was too ill to make it....
Thanks to Captain Bill again for bringing Wendy along to do the real captaining work including the speech at the end of season celebrations. Wendy is a great part of our team who brings the most positive vibe and actual love and encouragement to everyone in the team, as well as taking care of the team sheet and all the other formalities.... leaving Bill to get the biz done on the golfing side of things. Bill went undefeated again this year which is pretty dam good considering he gets the best opposition player nearly every week.... Unless it's 'Jak' of course... which reminds me, that Billy Cawthorne Also played one week for us this season, Taking on and halving with 'Jak' in round 4 at Mt Compass. Thank you Billy... it was actually his debut at the top level, (SGG A1 pennant) despite having some other fantastic golf credentials, Billy must now surely feel like he has taken a big step up the mountain of success!
Thanks again to all the players and caddies for their involvement in what has been a good season at Echunga. I'm looking forward to next year as I think there are some players who are developing their game to the next level, plus a few new members around that are keen to join the pennant ranks also. Thanks to the management committee for their support of pennants, and to the green keepers and staff for presenting Echunga Golf club and course in a positive way. It is already becoming common knowledge right around the hills and peninsula and into the suburbs, that Echunga isn't actually a mud hole but, "when we played there in pennants" it's actually very good (and dry) course to play for most of the year. The players have enjoyed playing in Autumn rather than Winter, and despite some reluctance from clubs, time will show that the clubs will reap long term $$ rewards for presenting their course to such a large cross section of golfers, whilst the course is in it's best condition.
Well done all and thanks for playing.
Signing off for now

2019 Men's Pennant Wrap Up
The 2019 pennant season started with the usual practice match the week prior to the start of the season. It was the captain's versus the vice captains team.
18 players showed up and each took the sacred vows of allegiance, and set out with either Ben Slack or Randy Jones in their hearts, and defending their honour in battle on their minds. Although Ben and Randy were no where to be seen, and we forgot to work out who was on who's team, remembering only after the first group (2 matches) had teed off. So the remaining seven matches were allocated teams and it was decreed that we would toss a coin after the game to decide the first 2 matches. We thought this would turn out to be quite exiting, but as it were, the captains won all seven of those matches, so we just decided to give the other 2 winners to the captains team as well to make it a 9-0 shellacking.

The season itself was a mixed bag of good wins, half chances and near misses.
The C1 team was our most successful team this year. They won their first 4 matches well, and secured a finals berth with 1 round to play, which was just as well because they were belted in the last round, but then got their act together nicely to win the final in style, and grab the pennant for the second year running. Well done to, The skip (Rob), The pres (Ray), The twins, (Wazza and Andy), Martin (Hendo) Henderson, Angry Anderson, and Darren Bloody Wilson. Well done to all players including others who played in this team during the season. They are Bill Kid, Neville Jordan, Craig Fromm, Colin Stevens, Alan Bailey, and Brian Wallace who would have played in the final, but fell sick during the week before and pulled out. Wal did recover in time and came out and caddied, so huge effort, well done Wal.
The B1 team won 3 of 5 matches and were unlucky not to have won more to make it into the final. The 3 games was enough to go into a countback for the second final spot. Unfortunately we lost the countback by only half a game and missed out on a finals berth.
The B2 team struggled from the outset loosing the first 2 matches before winning the 3rd and halving the 4th. They couldn't make the final but did avoid finishing bottom with 3 points and games up.
The A1 team started ok with a narrow loss to the eventual winners, Aston Hills, in round 1. Then followed up with a disappointing loss against lady Bay, losing 5 matches on the last or second last hole. A good win in round 3 restored hopes somewhat, but another disappointing loss in round 4 snuffed out any hopes of making the final. Much like round 2 the matches were close and the result could just as easily have gone our way. So the last round became a relegation final for our team against Murray bridge and a win was needed however it was only a half that our boys could manage, which sent us into a countback situation with South lakes who also finished with 3 premiership points. Thankfully we won the countback by 1 game and avoided relegation. Phew!
Players of the year were the twin towers Andy Amberg and Warren Ryan, each with 4 out of 5 wins during the minor round. And they both went on and had big wins in the final too.
Thanks to all people who played, be it regularly or as a fill in, and to all caddies and anyone who came out to watch during the season. Thanks to all of the team captains for organizing the teams and making my job much easier.
Looking forward to Next year when we can hopefully build on this year and have a bit more success.

The 2019 pennant season started with the usual practice match the week prior to the start of the season. It was the captain's versus the vice captains team.
