21st April 2015 - Nearest Point of Relief

I often get asked about determining the nearest point of relief so I thought I would visit how to determine this and then take a correct drop.

Firstly you need to determine what you are taking relief from. As an example lets assume that you have hit your ball into the drain that runs down the right hand side of our 14th hole. You ball sits in the middle of this drain and you wish to take relief prior to hitting your next shot. In order to determine the nearest point of relief you need to find the closest spot which provides relief from the interference of both the lie AND stance, there is likely to only be ONE place that is the nearest point of relief. To help determine this it may be best to place a tee on both the left and right hand sides of the drain. Which ever tee is closer to your ball will be the nearest point of relief.

A couple of important things with this:

1) There is no certainty that for a left hander the relief will be on the right or vice versa for a right hander.
2) The nearest point of relief may be in a bush or tree. You are getting relief from the drain, not any other interference from a natural object.

Once you determine the nearest point of relief you must drop your ball within 1 club length, which it can then roll a further 2 club lengths from, no closer to the hole. If it rolls further than this the ball must be re-dropped.

If you would like further explanation or have a question on any other matter please feel free to contact me using the captain@echungagolf.com.au email address.
